Johan Tobias Sergel was a famous Swedish neoclassical sculptor. His workshop was situated in Stockholm on the north side of where Sergels Torg is today.
Sergels Torg is the largest square in the centre of Stockholm and one of Swedens most famous landmarks that is named after him.
Johan Tobias Sergel was born in Stockholm in 1740.
He studied in Paris, then lived in Rome for 12 years where he sculptured many groups. There he also made the sculpture in bronze of the Swedish King Gustav III that now stands on Skeppsbron in Stockholm.
The King also asked him to do a monument tomb for Gustav Vasa.
He was primarily a sculptor but he also made drawings and paintings. One of his famous drawings was of Carl Michael Bellman.
